Premium Website Design for Stage Production and Entertainment Brands

A high-performance, portfolio-driven website designed to inspire creative directors and equip production professionals with the tools to realise large-scale visual environments.

Founded in 1987, Big Image is a global leader in large-format stage imagery and textile backdrops used in theatre, film, concerts, and large-scale events. Trusted by productions on Broadway, Netflix, and major international arenas, the company is known for pushing the boundaries of scenic production — from producing the world’s largest seamless textile imagery to developing new machines, materials, and production technologies. With an increased focus on AI services, their work sits at the intersection of creative vision and technical execution.

The Challenge

Big Image (formerly Big Image Systems) had recently introduced a new brand identity, reflecting a more confident and premium positioning for the company. However, the existing website no longer reflected this evolution.

Visually and structurally, the site lacked the bold, immersive feel needed to convey the scale and impact of Big Image’s work. At the same time, the new website concept called for a media- and animation-rich experience with scroll-driven storytelling — something that can easily become slow, heavy, and energy-intensive if not engineered carefully.

The challenge was therefore to create a website that both embodies the new brand identity and guides very different user groups quickly to the information most relevant to them — while delivering a highly visual experience that remains fast, efficient, and mindful of its environmental footprint.

Big Image chose to partner with Conlumina based on a shared belief in technical excellence, careful craftsmanship, and the ambition to create the strongest possible impression with the smallest possible environmental impact.

The Solution

We designed and built a new, multilingual flagship website structured around two clear visitor pathways: one for creative audiences and one for technical professionals.

The experience centres on an immersive homepage and a scrollytelling framework that guides visitors through Big Image’s production process. Through advanced scroll-driven animations, dynamic content filtering, and rich multimedia storytelling, visitors can explore portfolio work, discover technical solutions, and understand how projects move from concept to stage.

The site combines high-impact visuals with a clean, minimal interface to create a premium feel while maintaining strong usability. Sustainability, innovation, and R&D — core pillars of the brand — are integrated throughout the narrative, reinforcing Big Image’s position as a forward-thinking production partner.

From an technical perspective, performance and efficiency were key priorities. To support the site’s visual richness while keeping it fast and low-carbon, we precision-engineered an extremely lightweight custom WordPress theme and implemented a number of bespoke optimisation solutions — including automated image compression and WebP conversion, streamlined video delivery via CDN streaming, and a custom server-level caching system.

Using our own, handcrafted web page components, following the WAI-ARIA design guidelines, and providing full keyboard control, we also ensured WCAG 2.1 level AA compliance, offering a barrier-free user experience.

The result is a distinct, visually striking yet highly efficient platform that reflects Big Image’s commitment to innovation, precision, and sustainability.

Carbon Impact

Across pages, the site only emits 0.03g–0.2g of CO2 per page visit, resulting on average in a B carbon rating. This is cleaner than 80% of the web.
