The Challenge

The project involved several key challenges:

1. Database Optimisation: AJustPeer’s platform required a comprehensive database of peer-reviewed journals with around 30,000 entries. This necessitated significant database optimisation to ensure fast load times and efficient data retrieval.
2. Custom Development for Advanced Features: AJustPeer needed advanced search capabilities, allowing users to filter journals, discussions, and reviews. They also required live search result previews, to facilitate efficient research.
3. Pixel-Perfect Design: The platform had to reflect the ethos of scientific integrity, with a clean and modern UI that was visually appealing to researchers and academics.
4. Security First: Given the sensitive nature of the platform’s content, security was paramount.

Our Approach

We also achieved an A+ Carbon Rating. This makes the AJustPeer platform faster and cleaner than 95% of all websites globally.

Using our own, handcrafted web page components, following the WAI-ARIA design guidelines, and providing full keyboard control, we ensured WCAG 2.1 level AA compliance, offering disabled users of the AJustPeer website a barrier-free experience.

The platform was hosted on our cloud infrastructure using a LiteSpeed server optimised for WordPress, with Redis object caching, ElasticSearch, and Cloudflare protection.
